    It depends on the situation. There are many contributing factors. For example, writer/director Katherine Brooks left home in Lousiana at age 16 to move to L.A. Shel lived in her car and worked her way into directing reality tv shows like The Newlyweds, Meet the Barkers, The Simple Life, and The Osbornes, and she now writes and directs her own films. This situation was a lucky chance though, not everyone can make it like that. I say, find some mini films (or make your own) and direct them. Check myspace and facebook for listings or even kijiji and craigslist to find people looking for experience and practice like you are.
