What the deal with the catch phase for Joker? “WHY SO SERIOUS” in Dark Knight?
November 3rd, 2009 Posted by: admin
Why is Joker asking this in the new movie Dark Knight?
WHY SO SERIOUS!? Is it his catch phase? If so, what does he mean by it?
Second Question- Are they still using Joker as the man who kill Batman’s parents?
I recall in the old movie, which Jack play, they did; and I was wondering if Joker is still being the man who kill his parents?

I guess you havent seen the movie if you don’t know the answer to the second question.

1. In one of the Joker’s stories about how he got his scars, he tells Gamble (mob guy) that his Dad came home drunk, took a knife from Joker’s mom, who asks his son “WHY SO SERIOUS!” And cuts a smile on his face.
2. No, remember in Batman Begins with Bruce being in a courtroom when he came back to Gotham, that was his parent’s killer asking for an appeal on his sentance (which I belive he got)

Because he’s the joker, he laughs a lot and asks why people don’t laugh…and it probably is his catch phrase

It’s the Joker’s way of introducing madness into a sane world. His father said the same thing before he cut his face when he was a child, so now the Joker says the same thing when he commits horrible acts.
The answer to the second question is no, especially since it was Joe Chill that killed his parents in the first film.

yes joker did not kill batmans parents
why so serouis is like when he was telling his story of his scars like u need to smile more so like with when he’s killing people he is having fun with it
the storys what he siad
..”My father was…a drinker, and one night when he was especially crazy, more than usual. Mommy grabbed a kitchen knife to defend herself, and daddy didn’t like that. Not one bit. He took the knife, and, me watching, started cutting up her face, laughing the whole time. After he’s done, he looks at me and says, “Why so serious?” He comes over to me, puts the knife in my mouth, and tells me, “Lets put a smile on that face!”
Well, hello beautiful. You must be Harvey’s squeeze. And you are beautiful. You look nervous. Is it the scars? You wanna know how I got them? Com’ere, look at me, look at me! See, I had a wife, who was beautiful, like you. Who said I worried too much, that I needed to smile more. Who was a gambler, got it in with the sharks. So, you see, one day, they decided to carve her face. We didn’t have the money for surgeries…I just wanted to see her smile again, to let her know that I didn’t care about the scars. So I took a razor to my mouth and did this. Now she can’t even stand the sight of me! She leaves! Now I see the funny side. Now, I’m always smiling!
yes i know i am a batman freak
I WAS READING ABOUT IT THE JOKER HAS THIS TITCH WHERE HE LICKS HIS LIPS LIKE EVERY 30 SECS HE CAN’T HELP IT

Spolier.
1) Why SO serious is something his dad said when the Joker witnessed his dad kill his mom, and cut his mouth.
2) In the old movie, it said the Joker killed his parents. But, in the comics, a man named Joe Chill killed his parent after a play (it is also in Batman begins)
So, joker is not the one that killed his parents.

You must have not been paying attention if you don’t know what the joker ment by saying “WHY SO SERIOUS”? To bad.

“Why So Serious!?” was introduced in the story he told Gambol about his father. There was a line when he said: “Let’s put a smile on that face!”. In translation, I’ll say he’s trying to get this message out: Why the serious face, let me put a smile on your face for you.
As for your second question, keep in mind this is Christopher Nolan’s version of Batman. In Christopher Nolan’s version, Joker is not the killer of Batman’s parents.

To answer your first question, “Why So Serious?” has been around for about a year now, since last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Instead of showing footage or a trailer of the film, the Dark Knight panel sent the citizens on a city-wide scavenger hunt. It began when dollar bills started floating around the convention center. They were one dollar bills, with George Washington’s face being painted on with dark circles for eyes and a big red smile. On the bottom of these bills was printed, “WHY SO SERIOUS?” People figured that it was a website URL, so they logged on to whysoserious.com, which in fact was one of the official sites for the film. That was when the phrase first caught one. Since, Why so serious? has been used in a number of trailers, T.V. spots, and promotional posters. In the film, The Joker is telling Gambol about how he got his scars, and stated that his father took a knife to his (The Jokers) face and told him “Why so serious?” and “Let’s put a smile on that face!”.
And, now for the short and sweet version of my answer to your second question, no. The Joker is not the killer of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne. The Shooter was shown in Batman Begins.

When he (joker) was little his mum and dad were having a fight and he was frightened. his dad came over and asked him why so serious? and cut his mouth at the edges so that he would have a permanent smile.
2nd question don’t know!

The thing that you have to realize is that the “Other” movies are inspired by the batman comicbooks and the tv show.
Starting in Batman begins and continuing in the dark knight the storylines are taken from the comicbooks, but updated for the 21st century
But all that is besides the point…
GO SEE THE MOVIE AGAIN!!! but this time quit making out with the GF/BF and pay attention. it will be well worth the extra time and money.

1. The Joker is insane, what Joker finds funny (for example killing people), nobody else think is funny.
2. No, if you check the original movie in THIS series (Batman Begins)
the killer of Bruce Wayne’s parents is a simple thief named Joe Chill.
The Dark Knight is a sequel to Batman Begins, those two movies have no connections to any other previous Batman’s movie. They follow the original material : comics books / storylines / graphical novels. However, through all the years of since Batman was created in comics back in 1939, the story of the death of Thomas & Martha Wayne has been retold several times. In most cases Joe Chill is the murder, in others it is a unknown criminal. The portray of Napier / Joker as the killer was an idea in the script of Batman (’89).

I’m guessing you havent seen the movie.
He tells a story about when he was younger and how his father would come home drunk and abuse him and his mom and he (the joker) always had this afraid/serious face on and his dad always asked him “why so serious?” Thats why he cut his face..to make it seem like hes always smiling.
